Needy Families Support Program (NFSP)

Needy Families Support Program provides Grocery and cash assistance to low-income families with children while they strive to become self-sufficient. The program's goal is to reduce the number of families living in poverty, through employment and community resources. To qualify for NFSP, families must have very few assets and little or no income.

Improving NFSP would help low socioeconomic status recipients leave poverty, which research shows can improve both physical and mental health. Welfare reform designed to facilitate the transition from welfare to work has placed limitations on benefits that many low-income women can use to ensure the well-being of their families, causing increased stress and contributing to the onset and exacerbation of psychological illness.
